NDC Reaffirms Commitment to Ashanti Development as It Marks One Year in Government
From Ernest Best Anane, Kumasi
Mr. Augustus Nana Akwasi Andrews,The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has reaffirmed the party’s dedication to advancing the developmental agenda of the Ashanti Region.
Speaking at the party’s regional office during a ceremony marking the NDC’s first year in government, Mr. Andrews disclosed the massive support the region gave the party in the 2024 general elections.
He noted that the NDC secured seven parliamentary seats in Ashanti, capturing 34 % of the region’s total votes, a result he described as unprecedented in the history of party politics in the regiy.
The electoral backing, he said, enabled the NDC to unseat the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) and form a government under President John Dramani Mahama.
Mr. Andrews expressed gratitude to the people of Ashanti, as well as to traditional leaders such as Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, the Regional Chief Imam, other chiefs, pastors and all stakeholders who contributed to the party’s victory.
He assured residents that the NDC is poised to deliver a fair share of national resources to improve living standards across the region.
He outlined several initiatives that will benefit the region’s 43 districts, including the development of 24‑hour economy markets, construction of CHIPS compounds, and improvements to educational infrastructure nationwide. The chairman also emphasized the government’s focus on the krofrom (New-Tafo) market, a key commercial hub for Kumasi residents.
He said the Kumasi Mayor, Mr. Richard Ofori‑Agyemang, and Dr. Frank Amoakohene as the Regional Minister are working to appoint a new contractor early next year to resume work on the stalled project and other pending government undertakings in the region.
In his remarks, Mr. Andrews urged party supporters, branch and constituency executives, and grassroots members to remain patient as appointees work diligently to create employment opportunities.
He said the NDC recognizes the toil and contributions of its supporters, which were instrumental in the party’s 2024 electoral success.
The ceremony was attended by regional officials, traditional leaders, religious figures, and representatives of various stakeholder groups, all of whom echoed the call for continued collaboration to achieve the region’s developmental goals.
