By Ernest Best Anane
The Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has declared that the party’s founder, Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings’, values of probity, accountability, punctuality, and positive defiance should serve as a guide for the nation. Speaking at a ceremony to mark the 78th birthday of President Rawlings, Asiedu Nketia emphasized the importance of defining national values to judge leadership and citizens when they deviate from such values.
Asiedu Nketia noted that there is no country that has developed without national values. He suggested that the debate on national values should be taken to parliament to define the aspirations, beliefs, and code of conduct that represent the nation’s values. He emphasized that President Rawlings’ commitment to probity and accountability should be emulated by all citizens, regardless of their position.
The NDC Chairman emphasized President Rawlings’ democratic credentials, stating that he committed himself to collecting views from all concerned before making decisions.
He referred to times when President Rawlings consulted with market queens and big traders to inquire about the convenience of upcoming budgets. Asiedu Nketia also emphasized the importance of positive defiance, stating that individuals should stand up against wrongdoing, even if it means going against a superior’s directive.
Kimathi Agyeman-Rawlings, daughter of President Rawlings, recalled her father’s unflinching pursuit of real and meaningful participation of all Ghanaians in decision-making. She thanked the NDC for keeping her father’s vision alive and for remaining a beacon of hope and protective umbrella for the Ghanaian people.
Other party leaders, including General Secretary Fiifi Kwetey, former Chief of Staff Nana Ato Dadzie, and Naval Captain Asaasie Gyimah, paid tribute to President Rawlings’ legacy and leadership.
They emphasized his love for humanity, commitment to justice, and dedication to the welfare of the Ghanaian people.
