Ashanti Regional Minister Consoles Mpatuam Community over Assemblyman Killing

Dr. Frank Amoakohene, the Ashanti Regional Minister, visited the bereaved family and Chiefs of Mpatuam on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama to commiserate with them over the killing of Assemblyman Mr. Sampson Darkwah. The Assemblyman for Aboabo Tetekaso was allegedly shot dead by military personnel stationed at Asanko Gold Mines during a confrontation over mining concessions at Mpatuam.
Dr. Amoakohene together with Mr Isham Alhasaan in charge of government’s programmes and the Regional Security Council expressed sympathies to the family and residents, assuring a thorough investigation into the incident.
The Minister pledged to ensure safety and security of Assembly Members and sought release of another detained Assembly Member.
He suggested corporative responsible mining in engaging the youth for alluvial and surface mining.
According to him, committee involving Nananom, the Assembly, and Asanko Gold mining would deliberate on an amicable solution while the entire command unit of the military involved would be replaced.
Mr Antwi Boasiako Amponsah, the Presiding Member (PM) of the Amansie West District Assembly expressed sadness, pleaded for thorough investigation, and halt of Asanko Gold Mines operations until resolution.
Nana Owusu Ababio III, Akataneasehene, lamented that Asanko Mines refused corporate responsibilities and appealed for community mining and alleviation for the youth in the communities.
He alleged that Asanko Mines’ failure to honor promises of provision of health facilities, 25 to 35% of the youth employment into the company, and construction of their roads, while concerns over blasting materials and water safety.
The Minister stated that the government would ensure thorough probe into the Assemblyman’s death and ensure peace and the security of the residents, aim for lasting peace by addressing the community concerns over mining operations and military presence.
