The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has joined the global community to commemorate the World Day of Remembrance for Road Crashes Victims, calling for action to reduce the alarming rate of road accidents in the city and beyond.
Speaking to the media, Mayor of Kumasi, Mr. Richard Ofori Boadi, emphasized the importance of remembering the victims of road crashes and their families.
He expressed the need for concrete steps to prevent such incidents. Says the remembrance of crashes day is very essential because we must check our road networking and road designs.
The Mayor also stressed the need for a collective effort to address road safety, urging stakeholders to work together to implement effective measures to reduce accidents.
Dr. Yaw Larbi, representing the CEO of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, revealed that 30% of accident cases brought to the hospital are severe and devastating, claiming more lives than leading diseases.
Akwasi Wireko Brobbey, the Initiative Coordinator from Bloomberg Philanthropist, echoed the sentiments, stressing the urgent need to end or reduce road accidents. Says we must work together to make our roads safer, and it’s a call to action for all of us.
The World Day of Remembrance for Road Crashes Victims is observed annually on the third Sunday of November, serving as a reminder of the need for continued efforts to improve road safety and reduce fatalities.
The event was marked with personal medical items, bottled water, and an envelope presented to eight victims at the ‘C’ Block of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
He said the Bloomberg Philanthropist, in partnership with KMA and other stakeholders, is working to promote road safety and reduce accidents.
Mr Wireko Brobbey urged the public to join the fight against road accidents by reporting reckless driving, wearing seatbelts, and adhering to speed limits.
