Kumasi Residents Urged to Join Sanitation Efforts as KMA Launches First “Sanitation Day” of the Year
From Ernest Best Anane, Kumasi
The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) opened the year’s first “Sanitation Day” with a call for all residents to treat cleanliness as a shared responsibility, regardless of social status or political affiliation.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Francis Dwura Darko, Kumasi Metropolitan Coordinating Director, emphasized that sanitation is a collective effort. Says Sanitation hygiene is a collective effort, irrespective of one’s status in society or political dispensation.
He added that while KMA is working hard to keep the metropolis, especially the Central Business District (CBD), tidy, the initiative cannot succeed without active participation from the public.
Mr. Darko appealed to residents to make cleanliness a habit, particularly in front of their workplaces, whether shops or offices to complement the city authorities’ efforts.
He expressed concern that many Kumasi residents often stand by, expecting KMA staff and sanitation volunteers to finish the work before they open their businesses.
He said the attitude of folding one’s hands and waiting for us to finish the exercise before starting the day is worrying..
He indicated that to address the challenges, KMA management will review the current approach and develop a new strategy aimed at making sanitation activities sustainable and encouraging greater community involvement.
The Metro Director disclosed that the launch of the first Sanitation Day underscores KMA’s commitment to a cleaner Kumasi and stressed the importance of partnership between municipal authorities and citizens in maintaining a healthy urban environment.
