Ms Victoria Hammah has stated thst in a significant move, President John Dramani Mahama’s government has embarked on a mission to reclaim Ghana’s economic sovereignty, invoking the principles of Nkrumahism.
She said the renaming of the Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport is seen as a symbolic gesture, marking a shift towards re-centering Ghana’s identity around civilian constitutional sovereignty.
According Ms Hammah the move is part of a broader effort to revisit Ghana’s post-independence developmental trajectory, interrupted by the 1966 coup that overthrew Kwame Nkrumah.
She stated thst the administration’s vision is rooted in non-alignment, strategic autonomy, and policy independence, echoing Nkrumah’s stance within the Non-Aligned Movement.
Key initiatives she said include moving away from syndicated external financing arrangements in the cocoa sector and prioritizing domestic value addition.
He expressed the view that Ghana aims to process up to half of its cocoa output locally, signaling a deliberate shift from dependence on raw commodities to industrial upgrading.
She stated that the approach aligns with Nkrumahist economic thought, focusing on retaining greater value within the domestic economy, reducing exposure to external price shocks, and building industrial capacity. The move she observed seen as a strategic repositioning within global markets, rather than autarky.
Ms Victoria Hammah disclosed that the NDC government’s mandate is framed as an effort to transcend Ghana’s vulnerability to external economic pressures, without repudiating constitutional democracy or global engagement. Adding that the symbolic reconsideration of colonial-era commemorations, Nkrumahist articulation of foreign policy, and reforms within the cocoa financing architecture are seen as deliberate ideological consolidation.
