Kwadaso MCE Urges Adoption of Pay as You Dump Policy to Enhance Sanitation Hygiene
From Ernest Best Anane, Kumasi
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Kwadaso Municipal Assembly in the Ashanti region, Mr. Eric Asibey, has called on Ghanaians, particularly residents in the region, to adopt the Pay as You Dump Policy to improve sanitation hygiene. According to Mr. Asibey, the policy would help reduce the financial burden on the Assembly and government, which currently spends huge sums of money on sanitation hygiene.
Addressing the media after a clean-up exercise at the Sofoline Interchange, Mr. Asibey lamented that citizens often complain about not knowing how their taxes are being utilized, despite the significant expenditure on sanitation hygiene.
He emphasized that if citizens would take responsibility for disposing of waste properly, their taxes could be channeled towards developmental projects that benefit them.
The MCE disclosed that the Assembly was unaware of the Sofoline Interchange being used as a dumping site until it was brought to their attention through social media. He expressed surprise that the area had been turned into a dumping site and bushy area, posing risks to public safety and health.
Mr. Asibey stated that the Assembly would engage the subcontractor to take over the area and prevent it from becoming a dumping site again. Additionally, the Assembly plans to manage the tunnels of the interchange underpass, which currently pose a risk due to the removal of lighting cables.
The MCE’s call for the adoption of the Pay as You Dump Policy aims to promote responsible waste disposal practices among citizens. By doing so, the Assembly and government can redirect resources towards developmental projects that benefit the community.
