Anwomaso Power Plant to Add 140 MW to Ghana’s Energy Supply – Deputy Energy Minister

From Ernest Best Anane, Kumasi

The Deputy Minister for Energy, Hon. Richard Gyan Mensah, announced on Monday that the Anwomaso Power Plant in the Ashanti Region will increase Ghana’s national generating capacity by 140 megawatts when fully commissioned.

During a working visit to the plant, Hon. Mensah inspected the ongoing construction and said the tour was part of the government’s efforts to monitor progress on the 140 MW project. He expressed satisfaction with the pace of work and reiterated the administration’s commitment to strengthening power generation across the country.

The Deputy Minister disclosed that the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) has confirmed that the first 40 MW of the plant will be completed today, 23 December 2025. This initial tranche is expected to improve power stability, especially in Kumasi and the surrounding communities.

Hon. Mensah urged residents to cooperate with scheduled outages, explaining that the temporary interruptions are necessary to allow engineers to complete the works efficiently. He assured the public that once the plant is fully operational, it will reduce power fluctuations and support industrial and economic activities in the Ashanti Region and beyond.

The 140 MW project, of which 120 MW is slated for completion within the year, is a key component of the government’s strategy to ensure an adequate and reliable electricity supply nationwide.
