Ashanti Regional Chairman Mourns Dr. Samuel Sarpong

Mr. Augustus Andrews Nana Kwasi, The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic death of Dr. Samuel Sarpong, the party’s First Vice Chairman, in a helicopter crash on August 6, 2025. Dr. Sarpong was among eight individuals who lost their lives in the accident, which occurred while they were en route to Obuasi for the official launch of the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP)
Chairman Nana Kwasi described Dr. Sarpong’s death as a “big blow” to him and the party, emphasizing the significant contributions Dr. Sarpong made to the NDC’s development at both regional and national levels.
He fondly remembered Dr. Sarpong as a father figure and advisor, reiterated the impact of his loss on the party and its members.
The NDC has arranged for a state burial for Dr. Sarpong and Samuel Aboagye, former NDC Parliamentary Candidate for Obuasi East, who also perished in the accident.
The party will provide two buses to transport members to and from Accra for the funeral, showcasing their solidarity and support for the bereaved families. After the state burial, family members will have the opportunity to hold individual funerals.
Chairman Nana Kwasi appealed to Dr. Sarpong’s family to take heart, reminding them that “God has a reason for every circumstance.” This message of condolence reflects the party’s commitment to supporting its members during times of sorrow.
NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia had previously paid a solemn visit to Dr. Sarpong’s family, breaking down in tears as he recounted the circumstances surrounding Dr. Sarpong’s untimely demise.
Mr. Asiedu Nketia revealed that Dr. Sarpong had been appointed Board Chairman of the Cocoa Processing Company by President John Dramani Mahama on the morning of August 6, 2025, just before the fatal accident.
This appointment is a testament to Dr. Sarpong’s dedication to public service and his potential contributions to Ghana’s cocoa industry.
