King Solomon, Kaasmil Mining Companies Petitions Government for Intervention
From Ernest Best Anane, Kumasi
King Solomon and Kaasmil Mining Companies Ltd has petitioned the government and the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources to intervene in a dispute over a mining concession in Tontokrom, Amansie South District.
The company’s CEO, Mr. Charles Korankye, claims that Asanko Mines and the Tontokrom youth have unlawfully taken over a concession that the company has legitimately operated since 1990.
According to Mr. Korankye, the concession was acquired from the Ghana Mineral Commission, with copies sent to the Paramount Chief of Amansie, the District Chief Executive, and the District Assembly. However, the concession was allegedly taken away by Benvico Mining Company for political expediency during the previous government regime. The company has since sued Benvico to reclaim the concession.
Complications arose when Benvico sold the concession to another individual, who later sold it to Asanko Mines. Now, Asanko Mines and the Tontokrom youth are fighting over the concession, which Mr. Korankye insists belongs to his company with legitimate documents and a license. With machines still at the site, Mr. Korankye has petitioned the government through the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, and the Sector Minister to ensure the concession is returned to his company for peace to prevail.
The petition comes after a group of residents claimed that Asanko Gold Company deployed military personnel to the area.
However, the company clarified that the military presence is part of a national security initiative led by the Ghana Armed Forces in partnership with the Ghana Chamber of Mines. Dr. Amoakohene has urged the youth to remain calm and allow for peaceful dialogue to resolve the issue.
The Former Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, George Mireku Duker, has assured that the government is committed to resolving the dispute between Asanko Gold Ltd and the Tontokrom community. He emphasized the need for a harmonious relationship between the company and the community, stating that unity is crucial for mutual success.
The Minister has also suggested that the company consider supporting the affected youth with alternative employment or livelihood support.
