Traders Urge First Lady to Fulfill Promise of Overhauling Kejetia Market Management
From Ernest Best Anane, Kumasi Kumasi, Ghana – The Traders at the New Kejetia Terminals are mounting pressure on First Lady, Mrs. Lordina Mahama, to ensure a total overhaul of the market’s management. According to the traders, Mrs. Mahama had promised during her visit to the terminal in December 2024 that she would sack all management members and bring in new, competent individuals to address their challenges.
Six months after the promise, traders expressed disappointment that only three management members have been removed, while the rest remain in their positions. Mr. Stephen Chebureh, Spokesperson for the traders, questioned whether this partial removal aligns with the First Lady’s promise.
The traders have been grappling with numerous challenges, including ¹ ² ³:
Billing Irregularities*: Unpaid electricity bills amounting to GH¢70 million, leading to power disconnections
Poor Sanitation, Inadequate waste management and poor fire safety measures
Structural Deficiencies.
Delayed reconstruction of a fire-damaged section of the market
In March 2025, the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council directed the management of Kejetia Market to step aside for investigations into allegations of mismanagement. A three-member interim committee was established to oversee market operations during the probe
The traders are urging the First Lady to fulfill her promise and bring about a total overhaul to restore sanity to the market. They warn that leaving the current management in place would not yield positive change and threaten to take matters into their own hands if their demands are not met
