Small-Scale Miners Join Forces to Combat Galamsey

The National Concerned Small Scale Miners Association, Ghana (NCSSMAG), has taken a significant step in the fight against illegal mining by inaugurating its Anti-Galamsey Taskforce.
The taskforce aims to monitor and enforce compliance among small-scale miners, ensuring adherence to responsible and sustainable mining practices.
Mr Michael Kwadwo Peprah, President of NCSSMAG at the inauguration disclosed that the taskforce has been mandated to monitor and enforce compliance among members, with a focus on protecting river bodies and improving water quality.
According to him, Members are required to conduct peer reviews of each other’s operations to guarantee total compliance with responsible and sustainable mining guidelines.
Mr. Peprah explained that the initiative complements the Government’s Blue Water Guards Initiative, aimed at safeguarding water bodies from the destructive impacts of illegal mining.
He indicated that the Association has procured a mini speedboat to aid in enforcement on river bodies while taskforce have been established across all major mining areas.
The president of the Association stressed that all illegal mining operations on water bodies must cease immediately. Adding that the taskforce will not compromise in protecting our rivers for present and future generations.
Mr. Peprah disclosed that the NCSSMAG’s efforts to combat galamsey demonstrate a commitment to responsible mining practices and encourage collaboration with government and stakeholders
working together.
He expressed the view that small-scale miners can contribute to sustainable development and environmental protection in Ghana.
