Government of Ghana Reiterates Commitment to Affordable Housing Initiative, Chief of Staff

The Chief of Staff, Hon. Julius Debrah, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to delivering affordable housing solutions for Ghanaians. A strategic meeting was convened to advance the Presidential Initiative on Affordable Housing, as directed by H.E. President John Dramani Mahama.

The meeting brought together key stakeholders from various institutions, including Republic Bank, Ministry of Works and Housing, Public Servants Housing and Loans Scheme, SSNIT, and Ministry for Special Development Initiatives. The objective was to articulate the President’s vision and set out a clear framework for the rollout of sustainable and affordable housing schemes.

Delivering Practical and Affordable Housing Solutions*: Providing housing solutions for public sector workers and the broader citizenry.
Sustainable and Affordable Housing Schemes.

Developing housing schemes that are sustainable and affordable for Ghanaians.
Fostering collaboration among participating institutions to ensure the successful implementation of the initiative.

The participants welcomed the challenge and resolved to work with urgency and precision to develop a comprehensive implementation plan within the shortest possible time. This initiative is expected to have a significant impact on the lives of many citizens, improving their living standards and contributing to the country’s economic development.

The government’s commitment to affordable housing is part of a broader agenda to address the country’s housing deficit, estimated at 1.8 million units. President Mahama’s administration has pledged to complete ongoing housing projects, introduce innovative financing schemes, and foster public-private partnerships to make homeownership accessible to all Ghanaians ¹.

In a related development, the Ministry of Works and Housing has launched the District Housing Programme, aimed at providing access to housing across the country. This initiative will involve a multifaceted strategy combining land acquisition, efficient contracting, infrastructure development, and access to diverse funding mechanisms ².
